Sony α (the small alpha-Greek letter, which is often translated as Sony Alpha), is a room system set up on 5 June 2006.It uses and expands on the technologies of the Konica Minolta camera, including the Mount Minolta off SLR lens, whose assets were obtained by Sony by Sony by Sony with Konica Minolta and Sony in designing and manufacturing of many zoom lenses.

Before the acquisition of Sony, the α brand is already used in the Japanese market by Minolta for its off-camera system (marketed as “Dynaks” in Europe and “Maxxum” in North America). Sony adopted the name “A-Mount System” for Mount Minolta lens, preserved in his new SLR series.

The Sony’s entry into the DSLR market goes back to July 2005, where a joint venture with Konica Minoltawou led to both companies that market an updated line of DSLRs to the masses. Between 2006 and 2008, Sony was the fastest growing company in the DSLR market, which reached 13% market share in 2008 to become the third largest DSLR company in the world.
